We landed at Meynypilgyno (Мейныпильгино), which is the research and conservation facility that strive to save the Spoon-billed Sandpiper.  We did seen the Sandpipers but it was not anything like my first encounter.  It was nice to see some of the wintering North American bird in full breeding plumage.  As we traveled along the coast we had a great flyby of a Red-throated Loon.  The images in the field guides doesn't do this bird justice.   Although the conditions were overcast, this made for great images without harsh shadows but allowed me to use 1/1600s, f/5, ISO100, with a +1/3EV.  The fast shutter speed is required to stop any flying bird and the Loon flew by me at eye level.

After our time at Meynypilgyno we headed up the coast in search of Walrus.  On the way we encountered a pod of Orca and found the Walrus at the Pika River.  We were in zodiacs and we got so close to them or should I say they got close to us.  This was our last night on the ship and the next morning we landed at Anadyr to get our charter flight to Nome Alaska.  More photos can be seen on my Flickr site in album Far East Expedition 2017 Leg 2.
